In a business career spanning more than forty years, I’ve always been a believer in the importance of doing things differently. There will always be people – many of them with years of experience behind them – who will listen to your plans and advise you on the “right” and “wrong” way to do things. Sometimes you simply have to ignore that advice and pursue your own direction.  

 

That’s why I see myself as a “disruptive” pioneer. As a businessman, much of the success I’ve enjoyed has stemmed from looking at a market and finding an opportunity that hasn’t been identified or exploited or a way of working that flies in the face of received wisdom.   

 

I’m also a great believer in travelling light. Rather than being constrained by a cumbersome organisation I run my company with just a few key people, with much of the management outsourced to expert third parties. It’s an approach that I find highly effective.
